Report on 2011 Shinyanga Visit

Background & Objectives

The 2011 visit was aimed at understanding; progress on the Tanzanian Agricultural Start Up Programme (TASU); Oxfam's plans for Phase 3; and to commence the debate within the Fund as to what we should finance next year and beyond.

The three main projects within TASU are;

* Rice production } Supported by the Tanzania Fund
* Chicken husbandry }
* Sisal growing - Supported by Accenture & Oxfam's Enterprise Development Programme

Initial results from the rice and chicken projects* are;

Rice participants achieving a
43% uplift in the cash value of their annual production

Chicken participants achieving an
82% uplift.

On this trip we also visited some schools that had benefited from the EQUIP project, that we had part-funded a few years so. Meet the pupils here.

* Based on a sample of 120 farmers
