Shinyanga


  • According to the 2002 census Shinyanga has a population of 2.8 million whilst Tanzania itself has a population of 34.5 million people.
  • Due to high infant mortality rates, the life expectancy of Tanzania is 51 years.
  • 36% of the population live below the poverty line.


The Tanzania Fund chose to support the Shinyanga region due to the high levels of rural poverty. Shinyanga was a region crying out for basic aid programmes in education and in livelihoods.

Here simple measures can make the greatest difference.


Tanzania has a GDP of $20bn (2008), $514 per head. Over the years 2000 to 2008, its GDP grew by 0.8% pa in real terms. The population is 40m.
